The Cubs are on vacation today, so New Moon is devoting its space to team statistics. This is a better use of time than the exercize involved in drinking and gambling.
Let's lead off with hitting stats. The top five hitters and their batting averages are shown below. Note the youngsters in the top five.

A. Soriano: 305
The surprise here is that Mike Fontenot, recently called up from Triple-A Iowa, is leading all Cub hitters. This makes you wonder who else is hiding in Des Moines.
Here's another offensive hero. In tenth place among Cub hitters, we have pitcher Carlos Zambrano at .257. With pitchers like that, the National League has no need of designated hitters.
