Beware of Optimism at Wrigley

All right. Okay. Soriano looked impressive pounding out five hits Monday night against the Brew Boys.

The Cubs have won two in a row, and Lou Piniella has only two games left in the penalty box.

But before we line up at the two-dollar window to bet on the Cubs, let's remember that they're really not as consistent as Secretariat (the horse, not the branch of the United Nations).

If we want to see the Cubs perform well, we have to hope that Lou will kick his cap every now and then. Put your money on managerial tantrums, and don't apologize for them. Write to Lou and ask for them.

And here's something else. Let's give Ron Santo credit for the way he led the singing of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame."

Some people like to complain about Ron, but if you think it's easy to sing before 40,000 people when you can't even carry a tune, try it some time.

Maybe next time Ron will sing as well as Tony Bennett, but don't expect the Cubs to finish above .500.
