A few days ago, while all of you were asleep, Kerry Wood pitched one inning, threw 14 pitches, and struck out the side. All this occurred during a minor league game in Mesa, Arizona.
Wood pitched in spring training, but has been on the disabled list since then with tendinitis in his right shoulder.
Saturday's workout seemed to cause Wood no pain. It also proved that he can still throw strikes.
Speaking about Wood, Lou Piniella said it would be a mistake for anyone to hurry the pitcher's recovery. He also said that Wood's eventual return to the Cubs "would help our situation down the road."
If and when Wood does return, expect to see him pitching only in relief. He won't be starting any games.
