The Cubs have traded Jacque Jones to the Tigers in return for utility player Omar Infante. Infante, a native of Venezuela, hit .271 in the 2007 season. He has a lifetime hitting average of .253. Infante is 25 years old.
For the Cubs, the logic of the trade is that it will reduce the number of surplus outfielders on the roster. This move creates room in the outfield for Felix Pie. Infante normally serves as a utility infielder, although he can also play outfield in a pinch.
Infante has had an up and down career as a hitter in the major leagues. If he has a down year in the 2008 season, Cub fans may question the wisdom of the trade.
