What was the most important home run ever hit by a member of the Chicago Cubs? According to an article by Marc Zarefsky, it may have been Gabby Hartnett's 1938 "Homer in the Gloamin.'"
The homer that Hartnett hit on that September day sent the ball over the outfield wall, and it sent the Cubs into the World Series.
Sports writer Earl Hilligan usually gets credit for coining the phrase "Homer in the Gloamin.'" He called it that because the flight of the ball carried it into the late-afternoon darkness of Wrigley Field, where it remained unseen until it landed in the left-center bleachers.
