George Bush never fails to confuse and distress his fellow citizens. Is he stupid, crazy, or evil? Who can tell and does it matter?

First he says Iran poses a threat to the United States because it is developing nuclear weapons. But then our hot-shot spy network reveals that Iran isn't really making nuclear weapons at all.

Most people, if given this evidence, would change their opinion of Iran. No nukes, no foul. But not George.

Now Bush says that Iran remains a threat, not because it has nukes, but because it might have them someday in the future. So George leaves open the possibility that he might launch a war with Iran simply because it might build nukes sometime in the future.

But Burma, Ceylon, and Argentina might have nukes sometime in the future. Every country on earth might have them if you wait long enough. But George doesn't want to wait. He wants to stop Iran because it "might" do something in the future.

The editorial board at New Moon is confused and distressed.

Plame and Bush

Let's review the whole Valerie Plame incident. She worked for the CIA. Her husband, Joseph Wilson, made public statements in which he criticized the war with Iraq. Subsequently, someone or some group in the White House revealed Plame's employment with the CIA, which could have placed her safety in jeopardy.

When questioned under oath, several people said they had nothing to do with the dirty trick with the CIA. For example, I. Lewis Libby said under oath that he had nothing to do with the whole nasty business.

Libby was later found guilty of perjury and sentenced to 30 months in prison. Prez Bush promptly gave his old pal a pardon.

This brings us to Scott McClellen, Bush's former mouthpiece. In a new book to be released in 2008, McClellen makes statements that may or may not implicate Bush, Cheney, and Karl Rove in addition to Libby.

It's not quite yet a Bush-McClellen battle, because McClellen still has to clarify what he meant in the brief excerpt from the book revealed earlier this week. But when in doubt, the smart money always assumes that Bush lied. Never forget the WMDs.

Bush and the Plame Blame

An excerpt from a forthcoming book by Scott McClellen suggests that I.L. Libby, Karl Rove, and Prez Bush lied to the world when they said they had not leaked the name of CIA agent Valerie Plame. McClellen is a former Bush mouthpiece.

But now the publisher of the book says that's not really what McClellen's book says. Now that the excerpt has our attention, we're told the book won't be released until sometime in 2008. Knowing as we do how the current administration plays fast and loose with the truth, the editorial staff at New Moon assumes that Bush et al. were lying. What else could we expect? Isn't this the same outfit that brought us weapons of mass destruction and war without end?

Expect the Worst From Bush

As the Bush presidency continues to dismantle, expect wild efforts to recover a semblance of success as the thing collapses. In moments of desperation, failed politicians often begin gyrating hysterically. The neocons were hysterical to begin with. Why should they be any different now?

The most likely gyration would be an attack on Iran. The military will oppose it because they lack the troops to throw into the abyss, but that won't necessarily stop Bush and Cheney. The Joint Chiefs of Staff opposed the invasion of Iraq, but that didn't affect the prez and his veep.

Expect a wild ride as we head toward the 2008 elections.
